Skincare vs. Summer: Win the Battle Before It Begins

Spring Break is just around the corner, and here in Puerto Rico, it also marks the unofficial start of summer. As we prepare for vacations, beach days, and outdoor celebrations, we must also consider how environmental factors like Saharan Dust, heat, and intense sun exposure impact our skin. At Irvine Skin Care, we emphasize personalized skincare routines that not only nourish your skin but also protect and balance its delicate microbiome.
Saharan Dust: What It Means for Your Skin

Every year, Puerto Rico experiences the arrival of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), bringing with it tiny particles of sand, pollutants, and microbes. This dust affects not just our respiratory system but also our skin’s health. According to experts at the University of Puerto Rico’s Institute of Tropical Ecosystem Studies, the concentration of Saharan Dust has been more severe over the years; meaning it’s more important than ever to protect your skin from its effects, which include:
Dehydration & Dryness – The dry air that accompanies the dust can strip moisture from your skin, leading to dullness and irritation.
Inflammation & Sensitivity – Fine particles can trigger redness, itching, and even allergic reactions, especially in those with rosacea or sensitive skin.
Clogged Pores & Breakouts – Dust settles on the skin, mixing with sweat and oil, leading to increased acne flare-ups.
Premature Aging – Pollution and dust generate oxidative stress, which weakens the skin barrier and accelerates signs of aging like fine lines, dark spots, and loss of elasticity.

The Importance of the Skin Microbiome
Your skin is home to a complex ecosystem of beneficial bacteria, known as the microbiome, which plays a key role in maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion. When exposed to Saharan Dust, harsh UV rays, and excessive heat, this delicate balance can be disrupted, leading to sensitivity, inflammation, and breakouts.

To help restore and protect your microbiome, incorporate gentle yet effective skincare products that support skin barrier function. We recommend:
Hydrating Serums & Moisturizers – Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, squalane, niacinamide, thymoquinone, allantoin, vitamins and antioxidants to replenish moisture and repair damage.
Custom Blends for Cleansers, Toners, and Serums – Our personalized formulas cater to your skin’s specific needs while repairing and preserving the skin’s microbiome.
Barrier-Protecting Creams – Our Custom Blends and Hydrogen Moisturizer are perfect options to lock in hydration while keeping your skin resilient.
Cooling Treatments – Applying a layer of plain Greek yogurt to your skin with cold water compresses on top can help soothe inflammation and refresh overheated skin. You can add a drop of honey to the Greek Yogurt to “feed” the healing bacteria in the yogurt before application.
After-Sun Care – If your skin is overheated, cool down gradually before washing your face with cold water. Think of your skin like a hot pan—if you pour cold water on it immediately, it reacts. Instead, allow your skin to cool naturally, then cleanse thoroughly. Sunscreen and concealers can be heavy, so we recommend double cleansing to ensure all residues are removed. Afterward, apply cold compresses with tea tree or lavender essential oils, or chamomile tea to soothe irritation. If there’s redness or sensitivity, dilute your toner or astringent with cold water before applying it with a soft cotton pad.
Refreshing Mists – Spritz your skin with cold aloe juice mixed with distilled water and few drops of grapeseed oil to maintain hydration throughout the day. Store in the refrigerator for no more than 3-4 days. If taking to the beach, place the sprayer bottle in with your cold drinks to keep it from spoiling and keep cool to benefit the skin.

Sun Protection: A Non-Negotiable Step

With increased sun exposure during Spring Break and the beginning of summer, applying broad-spectrum sunscreen should be a daily habit. UV rays not only cause sunburn but also contribute to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. When choosing a sunscreen:
Opt for non-nano zinc oxide formulas for safe and effective sun protection.
Reapply at least every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.
An SPF higher than 30-45 (sun protection factor) might not be a better for your skin as the chemicals needed to raise the SPF can create irritation and other unwanted side effects. Using the lower SPFs and repeating application often might be your best option, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
Complement your sun protection with hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.

Practical Tips for a Simple Yet Effective Routine

With busy schedules and vacations ahead, keeping your skincare routine simple yet effective is key. Focus on:
Gentle Cleansing – Remove dust, sweat, and excess oil without stripping your skin. Our Vitamin Cleanser and Custom Blends for Cleansers provide a personalized and microbiome-friendly solution.
Hydration & Barrier Repair – Use products with soothing ingredients to counteract dehydration and inflammation.
Daily Sun Protection – Never skip sunscreen, no matter where you are.
Avoid Harsh Exfoliation – Your skin may already be sensitized from the elements, so be gentle when exfoliating and using facial scrubs.
Emergency Skin Relief – If you are overheated or your skin feels red and hot cool your head first before attempting to treat your skin. Keep a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas handy and place it on your head (I know it’s funny to use frozen peas but it really hugs your head to cool down the hot feeling on your face) then apply cold or ice water compresses to cool down overheated skin and reduce inflammation quickly. Do not use the ice or any plastics (like the iced globes) directly as these can harm the delicate facial skin.
Keeping Your Skincare Products Safe in the Heat
Never leave your creams, makeup, or sunscreen directly exposed to sunlight or in the car. Heat can alter the formula and ruin the product.
Disinfect your makeup brushes and applicators daily. A quick way is to spray alcohol on them, rub them against a paper towel. It takes just a few seconds to dry.
You ca store skincare products in the fridge to keep them fresh and effective.
When traveling, pack your products in small plastic containers and keep them in your carry-on.
